Alcohol and Drug Addiction can essentially be described as the development of a maladaptive coping style that becomes habitual and ultimately leads to a progressive deterioration in the quality of one’s life.  It is a pathological relationship with a mood-altering substance that continues despite adverse physical, mental or spiritual consequences.  Over time it becomes the major priority in life for which the addict will sacrifice almost anything.

Signs of addiction may include some of the following criteria:

  • tolerance – needing increasing amounts of the substance to achieve the desired effect, or experiencing diminished effect with continued use of the same amount
  • withdrawal – psychological or physical distress when the substance is discontinued
  • taking more of the substance than what is originally intended
  • unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control use
  • spending a great deal of time on activities necessary to obtain the substance, to use the substance, or to recover from its effects
  • giving up or reducing important social, occupational or recreational activities because of the substance use

Stopping this behavior is not simply a matter of willpower.  Even though the initial decision to drink or take drugs may have been voluntary, repeated use over time causes changes in brain chemistry that result in a loss of control over the addictive behavior and makes stopping it extremely difficult.  In addition, there may be other psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, effects of early neglect or trauma, or the presence of multiple addictions that need to be addressed for a full recovery.
